Job Overview
Job purpose
EPCC is the UK’s leading centre for supercomputing and data science service provision. We host and manage a unique collection of leading-edge systems such as the UK’s national supercomputing service (ARCHER2) and the Edinburgh International Data Facility (EIDF). We provide researchers and industry with a range of services including high performance computing, powerful private cloud-based virtual desktops, AI-capable GPU and Cerebras wafer-scale clusters and highly secure data storage and analysis capability for trusted research environments.
Our apprentices join the small and friendly Systems team within EPCC that provides infrastructure deployment and support, system administration, cybersecurity and operations functions for the systems hosted at the University of Edinburgh's Advanced Computing Facility (ACF), a secure state-of-the-art data centre located at the Bush Estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
EPCC has a long and successful history of providing apprenticeships and is committed to providing training, development and coaching to enable apprentices to succeed in their studies and early careers.
Apprenticeships are full time (35 hours per week), including up to one day per week study allowance, and are most suitable for candidates wishing to complete a degree in the field of Computing and IT as a Graduate Apprentice. Apprentices are based at the ACF and the Bayes Centre in the University of Edinburgh’s central campus.
As a Graduate Apprentice you will study for your degree alongside your job, spending approximately 80% of your time in work and 20% in university. This unique combination offers an integrated experience, where practical skills and knowledge gained during the university days can be embedded in your working practices. Skills learned directly in the workplace are aligned with and can be applied to coursework and assessment. This accelerated entry programme allows you to attain an honours degree in 2 years, the same time as traditional students who enter an equivalent full-time university course at the same level.
You will study on a Graduate Apprenticeship degree programme towards a BEng (Hons) Cyber Security at Edinburgh Napier University. This course provides relevant fundamental knowledge related to Cyber Security such as encryption and authentication, and also provides relevant practical examples through lab-based practice, while emphasising engineering practice.
You will initially be taught the principles of security and digital forensics using specialist software and equipment. You will then develop the ability to apply professional standards to the analysis, design, testing and evaluation of reliable and maintainable software.
This is a 2 year programme for which the successful candidate must meet the typical entry requirements for year 3 entry into Edinburgh Napier University’s BEng (Hons) Cybersecurity Graduate Apprenticeship.
To enter this programme at the start of Year 3 you must have 240 SCQF credits (or equivalent) of which a minimum of 120 credits are at SCQF 8 (or equivalent) and/or significant recognition of prior learning (RPL) through industry-related experience, qualifications, and informal learning.
