Quality Engineer Lead – DevOps Aligned (Tech-for-Good | Edinburgh)

We’re working with a mission-led, Edinburgh-based organisation using technology to create meaningful impact. They’re looking for a modern Quality Engineer Lead with strong JavaScript expertise to drive quality across complex, distributed backend systems.

This is not a traditional QA role. You’ll shape how quality is engineered into systems from day one—and how it’s continuously validated in production.

What You’ll Do

• Identify risks early across architecture, backend services, APIs, and data flows
• Embed quality practices throughout the SDLC to reduce late-stage defects
• Design and implement backend testing strategies for complex, distributed systems (microservices / APIs)
• Build JavaScript-based automated testing frameworks and integrate them into CI/CD pipelines
• Implement contract testing to ensure reliability between services and across integrations
• Develop and maintain scalable test data management strategies, ensuring environments reflect real-world data scenarios
• Validate system behaviour under load, scale, and high data volumes
• Define metrics-driven quality gates to improve release confidence
• Use observability (logs, metrics, traces) to detect and diagnose production issues
• Collaborate with engineers to design resilient, testable, and observable systems by default

What You Bring

• 5+ years in Quality Engineering within modern CI/CD environments
• Strong JavaScript skills (essential), with experience building automated tests (e.g. Cypress, Playwright, Jest, or similar)
• Proven experience in backend/API testing within complex, distributed environments
• Hands-on experience with contract testing (e.g. Pact or similar approaches)
• Strong expertise in test data management — creating, maintaining, and scaling reliable test data for automated testing
• Experience designing risk-based testing strategies (unit, integration, E2E)
• Strong understanding of system behaviour under load, high throughput, and large data volumes
• Experience working in B2C, SaaS, or high-traffic environments
• Comfortable working with reliability metrics (MTTR, failure rates, performance thresholds)
• A proactive mindset focused on continuous improvement—not just defect detection
