Associate Director - Investment Portfolio Management

Based: Edinburgh or Glasgow

The Scottish National Investment Bank is seeking an experienced Associate Director - Investment Portfolio Management to play a key role in the active management of the Bank's patient capital investment portfolio.

As an Associate Director in the Portfolio Management team, you will support post-investment management across a diverse portfolio of equity and debt investments. You will monitor financial performance and mission impact at both individual investment and portfolio level, while helping to shape value-creation strategies over long development and commercialisation timelines.

This is a senior opportunity within the Portfolio Management function, working closely with Investment, Impact, Risk, Finance and Operations colleagues to support post-investment stewardship, manage risk, and maximise long-term financial and mission outcomes for Scotland across a diverse portfolio of investments.

We welcome applications from candidates who believe they can excel in this role, even if you do not meet every single requirement. We value diverse experiences and perspectives and encourage applications from all backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a diverse portfolio of equity and debt investments, including monitoring financial performance, mission impact and covenant compliance.
  • Build effective relationships with investee management teams and attend boards as an Observer where required.
  • Provide regular performance and risk reporting to the Executive Director - Investment Portfolio Management and the Asset Management Committee.
  • Work closely with the Impact team to ensure mission impacts are tracked and reported in line with investment agreements.
  • Collaborate with Investment colleagues to ensure post-deal management considerations are embedded in investment documentation.
  • Coordinate with Investment Operations to manage fund flows, including drawdowns, repayments, dividends and fees.
  • Partner with Investment Risk and Finance teams to manage underperforming investments and support turnaround strategies.
  • Apply specialist sector knowledge to assess progress against complex technical, regulatory and development milestones.

Key Skills & Experience

You will bring previous post-investment or asset management experience, combined with the judgement and curiosity required to support innovation-led businesses operating over long time horizons.

  • Experience in investment origination, post-deal management or asset management, across equity and/or debt.
  • Deep understanding of one or more specialist sectors, including the ability to assess technical and commercial development milestones.
  • Advanced knowledge of sector-specific financial modelling and valuation, particularly in high-uncertainty environments.
  • Experience conducting rigorous technical and commercial appraisals, including feasibility, scalability and IP considerations.
  • The ability to analyse market trends, innovation developments and competitive dynamics to shape portfolio support.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to engage credibly with senior management teams and internal committees.
  • A collaborative approach, working effectively with risk, finance, operations and impact colleagues.
  • A degree qualification, with a professional qualification (e.g. CA, CFA or similar) highly desirable.
  • Alignment with the Bank's missions and values, and a commitment to delivering long-term positive outcomes for Scotland.

The salary range is £86-100k, depending on experience, with additional benefits including 30 days annual leave plus public holidays, a 12% non-contributory pension, volunteer days, and more.
