About Amber Labs

Amber Labs is a digital transformation partner for highly regulated industries, delivering secure AI, data, cloud and software solutions across complex and high-stakes programmes. We help organisations build and operate secure, scalable digital services.

The Role

We are seeking a DevOps Engineer to join a delivery team supporting a significant government programme. You will help build and maintain secure, scalable cloud infrastructure and the delivery capabilities behind modern digital services.

This is a hands-on role covering AWS, CI/CD, automation, containerisation and operational support. You will work closely with developers, testers and technical specialists to ensure applications can be reliably developed, tested, deployed and operated.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain and support secure, scalable AWS infrastructure across development, test and production environments.
  • Work with AWS services including ECS, Lambda, SNS, SQS, ElastiCache/Redis, Route53 and CloudWatch.
  • Build, maintain and troubleshoot GitLab CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test and deployment.
  • Support containerised applications using Docker, Docker Compose and Kubernetes.
  • Troubleshoot deployments, containers, infrastructure and application environments.
  • Automate infrastructure configuration and operational processes using Ansible and Packer.
  • Use monitoring and observability tools to identify availability, performance and reliability issues.
  • Diagnose technical issues across AWS, networking, containers and deployments, supporting incident resolution and root-cause analysis.
  • Continuously improve automation, reliability, resilience and engineering efficiency.
  • Work collaboratively within Agile, multidisciplinary delivery teams.
  • Contribute to technical discussions, identify risks and dependencies, and communicate technical issues clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Skills & Experience

  • Strong commercial AWS production experience, working across development, test and production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with GitLab CI/CD, including building, maintaining and troubleshooting automated pipelines.
  • Practical professional experience with Docker, containerisation and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management using Ansible and/or Packer.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps principles, modern software delivery and Agile methodologies.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues methodically and identify root causes.
  • Ability to work autonomously, take ownership of technical challenges and proactively identify improvements.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills within multidisciplinary delivery teams.
  • BPSS clearance or eligibility to meet the required clearance criteria.

Desirable

  • Experience with Terraform or other Infrastructure as Code technologies.
  • Knowledge of AWS networking and cloud infrastructure design.
  • Experience with performance/load testing and automated testing within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with MongoDB, Amazon RDS, Oracle and ElastiCache/Redis.
  • Experience with Jira and Confluence.
  • Exposure to testing tools such as Playwright, Cucumber, JUnit, JMeter, RestAssured, Jest or Mocha.

Benefits

25 days annual leave plus bank holidays.

Private medical insurance with Bupa.

Remote-first working, with access to our Liverpool Street office.

Personal training budget and professional development opportunities.

Perkbox membership, with discounts across retail, travel, dining and wellness.

Electric Vehicle Scheme after one year of service.

Regular team socials and a referral scheme offering up to £3,000 for successful hires.

Choice of PC or Mac.

Our Culture

We are a team of experts who are trusted to take ownership of their work and given the space to deliver. We maintain a flat structure and straightforward processes, encouraging people to share ideas, challenge assumptions and continuously improve how we work.

You will have the support of experienced colleagues around you, whether you need to sense-check an approach, solve a complex client challenge or collaborate on a technical problem. We value people who take pride in their work, support their teams and want to leave things better than they found them.

Recruitment Process

Applications are reviewed by our in-house Talent team. Successful candidates typically complete a technical interview followed by a behavioural interview focused on communication and approach to work, with a final leadership discussion where required.

We use AI responsibly across our business, but our hiring decisions are made by real people throughout the process, from CV review and interview progression through to making an offer.

Amber Labs is an equal opportunities employer committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to do their best work, regardless of background, identity or experience.
