About the Role

We're looking for Software Engineers who develop using Java to join Amber Labs and contribute their expertise across major digital transformation programmes.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on secure, scalable, and high-performing applications that support critical public sector services. You'll collaborate within multidisciplinary agile teams, helping to design, develop, and deliver modern software solutions using Java and Spring Boot.

Whether you're an experienced engineer looking to deepen your technical expertise or a senior developer keen to influence engineering best practices, you'll have the opportunity to work on meaningful projects, embrace modern DevOps approaches, and contribute to the delivery of impactful digital services.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain applications using Java and Spring Boot

• Design and implement scalable, resilient, and maintainable software solutions

• Apply software design patterns and engineering best practices

• Develop high-quality code using Test-Driven Development (TDD)

• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support efficient software delivery

• Deploy and manage applications using Docker and Kubernetes

• Collaborate with engineers, architects, delivery teams, and stakeholders

• Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives

• Support agile delivery practices within distributed, remote-first teams

• Help drive engineering excellence across the software development lifecycle

Requirements

• Commercial experience developing software with Java

• Experience using Spring Boot and the wider Spring Framework

• Strong understanding of software design patterns and object-oriented programming principles

• Experience with modern software development practices and delivery processes

• Knowledge of containerisation technologies including Docker and/or Kubernetes

• Experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines

• Strong understanding of Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing practices

• Passion for building high-quality, maintainable, and scalable software

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills

• Experience working within agile teams and remote environments

• Ability to work across multiple levels of technical complexity and responsibility

Desirable Skills

• Experience delivering solutions within UK Public Sector or Government environments

• Experience with cloud-native architectures and microservices

• Familiarity with modern DevOps practices and automation tooling
