Principal Power Electronics Engineer

Location: Edinburgh, Scotland

Working Pattern: Full-Time, On-Site (5 Days per Week)

Salary: Competitive + Benefits

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Principal Power Electronics Engineer to lead the technical delivery of advanced power conversion systems for demanding industrial, energy, transportation and mission-critical applications. This is a senior engineering position offering the opportunity to influence product architecture, mentor multi-disciplinary teams and act as the technical authority across the full product development lifecycle.

Operating from our Edinburgh engineering facility, you will lead the design and development of high-power electronic systems, working closely with customers, project managers and engineering teams to deliver innovative, robust and commercially successful solutions. This is an on-site role, requiring regular collaboration with engineering, manufacturing and test teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical execution of complex power electronics projects from concept through to delivery.
  • Define system architectures and ensure designs meet customer, performance and safety requirements.
  • Develop system models and simulations to validate performance under all operating conditions.
  • Produce functional specifications and technical documentation for multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Work alongside project management teams to reduce technical risk and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Lead design reviews and approve technical documentation, component specifications and engineering procedures.
  • Support customer engagement activities and present technical solutions during design reviews.
  • Drive product qualification, validation and compliance activities.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to engineers across multiple disciplines.

Required Experience

The successful candidate will have a strong background in the design and development of power electronic systems, including:

  • Design, simulation and testing of power electronic converters including AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC topologies.
  • Experience with low-voltage power conversion systems up to 1000Vac / 1500Vdc and above 10kW.
  • Development of solutions for industrial, renewable energy, transportation, defence or critical infrastructure applications.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools such as SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS.
  • Strong understanding of analogue and digital circuit design, magnetic components, thermal management and system integration.
  • Knowledge of EMC design principles and mitigation techniques.
  • Hands-on experience using laboratory test equipment and managing validation activities.

Preferred Experience

  • Technical bid support and customer-facing engineering activities.
  • Product certification and regulatory compliance experience.
  • Experience across the complete product lifecycle, from concept through commissioning.
  • Familiarity with medium-voltage systems, embedded control or software-controlled power electronics.
  • Previous leadership or line management responsibility for engineering teams.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Master's degree, PhD, Chartered Engineer status or professional membership would be advantageous.

Why Apply?

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior engineer looking to combine hands-on technical expertise with technical leadership responsibility. You'll play a key role in developing next-generation power conversion technology while working closely with customers and contributing to strategically important engineering programmes.

Please note: this position is based in Edinburgh and requires regular on-site attendance due to the collaborative, laboratory and product development nature of the role.
