Lead Engineer - Java Backend

Location: Edinburgh (preferred) / London

Contract: 12 months

Working Pattern: Hybrid - 2 days in the office

I'm looking for a Lead Engineer to drive Java backend delivery on a major UK banking programme. This is an opportunity to take technical ownership, shape engineering solutions and work across distributed teams to deliver secure, scalable services in a demanding financial services environment.

You'll lead the delivery lifecycle from technical design and implementation through testing, integration and release, ensuring applications meet agreed standards for quality, security, performance and reliability. You'll also collaborate with architecture, product, DevOps and offshore engineering teams to resolve technical challenges and keep delivery on track.

Key Skills:

• Strong hands-on Java 8+, Spring and Spring Boot development
• REST API design and microservices architecture
• Kafka and event-driven integration patterns
• Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and cloud-based deployment
• Docker, Helm and Kubernetes
• BDD/TDD, JUnit and automated unit testing
• CI/CD, Jenkins, Git and SonarQube
• API gateways, API security and service integration
• Agile delivery using Scrum, Jira and Confluence

Experience leading engineering delivery across banking or financial services teams would be beneficial, particularly within distributed systems and production environments.
