The Opportunity

An established legal practice based in Edinburgh is seeking a Family Law Solicitor to join its growing family law department.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced family solicitor to manage their own caseload, work closely with a supportive team and contribute to the continued growth of an established practice.

The ideal candidate will have approximately 2–5 years' post-qualification experience (PQE) in family law and be confident handling matters independently, with minimal supervision. They will have strong technical knowledge, excellent client care skills and the ability to provide clear, practical and commercially aware legal advice.

The successful candidate will play an important role in developing the department, maintaining strong client relationships and contributing to the wider success of the practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a varied family law caseload independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Advise clients on a broad range of family law matters, delivering accurate, timely and high-quality legal services.
  • Handle financial provision matters, including complex cases and matters involving high-net-worth individuals.
  • Represent and advise clients in accordance with relevant Scottish family law legislation, procedures and professional standards.
  • Manage court-related matters, including Sheriff Court procedures and, where applicable, Court of Session proceedings.
  • Maintain strong client relationships through clear communication, sound judgement and a professional, client-focused approach.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the family law department and wider practice.
  • Contribute to the continued development and growth of the department.
  • Identify opportunities to develop client relationships and promote the firm's legal services in accordance with professional conduct requirements.
  • Take responsibility for the quality of work, management of deadlines and effective prioritisation of competing demands.

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Qualification as a solicitor in Scotland and relevant experience practising family law.
  • Approximately 2–5 years' PQE, although candidates with other levels of relevant experience may be considered.
  • Strong working knowledge of Scottish family law and relevant court procedures.
  • Experience managing a caseload independently and working with minimal supervision.
  • Significant experience in financial provision matters, particularly complex cases and/or high-net-worth matters.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, drafting and client relationship skills.
  • A professional, proactive and commercially aware approach.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgement and take responsibility for their work.
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Word, email and basic Excel.
  • A current driving licence.

Accreditation as a family law specialist through the Law Society of Scotland would be advantageous. Candidates who are not currently accredited should be willing to work towards accreditation promptly.

Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate will be approachable, enthusiastic and confident, with the ability to build rapport with clients and colleagues.

They will be a strong team player who can also work autonomously, demonstrate initiative and contribute positively to the wider business. A willingness to learn, take on new responsibilities and support the continued development of the practice is essential.

What the Firm Offers

  • A supportive and collaborative working environment.
  • Flexible and agile working arrangements by agreement.
  • Competitive remuneration, negotiable depending on experience.
  • Potential to earn a performance-related bonus.
  • Opportunities for career progression and increased responsibility as the department grows.
  • The opportunity to develop specialist expertise and contribute meaningfully to an established family law practice.

Working Arrangements

The standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with flexibility available by agreement.

The role requires a commitment to professional conduct, client confidentiality and the ethical standards applicable to Scottish solicitors.
