Cloud Software Engineer - #2178685
NewSpace Technical
Cloud Software Engineer
Location: Glasgow or Edinburgh, Scotland
Working arrangement: Hybrid
Employment type: Full-time
NewSpace Technical is partnering with an innovative space technology company developing advanced space systems and the next generation space-based applications.
We’re looking for a Cloud Software Engineer to help design and build the cloud-based systems that connect software, data and intelligent hardware.
This is an opportunity to work on challenging engineering problems across cloud platforms, distributed systems, backend development and connected devices. You’ll contribute to building secure, reliable and scalable systems, working alongside an experienced engineering team in a specialist technology environment.
If you enjoy understanding how complex systems work, solving problems and building software that needs to be dependable, we’d love to hear from you.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll contribute to the design, development, testing and operation of cloud-based software, with opportunities to work across infrastructure, backend services, connected devices and system security.
Cloud development and connected systems
- Build and maintain cloud-based services that communicate with connected devices and edge systems.
- Develop reliable device-to-cloud communication and asynchronous workflows.
- Help determine which tasks should run in the cloud and which are better handled on connected devices.
- Monitor system performance and contribute to troubleshooting and continuous improvement.
- Design systems with scalability, reliability and efficient data handling in mind.
Backend development and data management
- Develop backend services and software components using modern programming languages.
- Design APIs, data models and persistence layers.
- Work with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
- Improve query performance, data access and storage efficiency.
Distributed systems and networking
- Build software components that communicate across networks and handle delays, failures and unreliable connections.
- Work with messaging systems, communication protocols and data pipelines.
- Develop concurrent and parallel software where appropriate.
- Contribute to task orchestration, prioritisation and coordination between distributed components.
- Apply networking fundamentals to system design and troubleshooting.
Cloud infrastructure and security
- Help design secure and scalable cloud architectures using platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
- Contribute to infrastructure automation using tools such as Terraform.
- Support CI/CD pipelines and software deployment workflows.
- Work with containers and orchestration technologies.
- Apply security best practices to protect data in transit and at rest.
Testing and software reliability
- Develop and execute component and system tests.
- Verify software against defined requirements and document the results.
- Investigate technical issues and help improve system reliability.
- Apply structured approaches to software design, protocols and system behaviour.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone with strong technical fundamentals, a logical approach to problem-solving and an interest in building dependable cloud-based systems.
Essential skills and experience
- A degree or postgraduate qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- 0–2 years of relevant experience, including graduate projects, internships, placements or equivalent practical work.
- A strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures and computational problem-solving.
- Programming experience in at least one backend or systems language, such as Go or Rust, or a strong foundation in another language with a willingness to learn.
- Experience or practical exposure to cloud platforms, ideally AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
- An understanding of distributed systems, asynchronous communication or message-based architectures.
- Familiarity with databases, persistent storage and networking fundamentals.
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code or automated deployment workflows.
- Familiarity with Linux development environments.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to document technical work.
Cloud certifications: AWS certifications, such as AWS Certified Developer – Associate or AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, would be beneficial. Equivalent hands-on experience and demonstrable technical ability are also valuable.
Skills that would be an advantage...
You don’t need experience in every area below. Knowledge or interest in any of these would help you stand out:
- Infrastructure as code, including Terraform or Terragrunt.
- Docker, Kubernetes or other container technologies.
- Multithreaded programming, concurrency and parallel processing.
- Distributed systems, messaging platforms and event-driven architectures.
- IoT, edge computing or connected hardware.
- Secure communication protocols and cloud security architecture.
- Formal methods, automata, state machines or protocol verification.
- Software testing, system qualification and reliability engineering.
- AWS Security Specialty certification.
- Post-quantum cryptography or other emerging security technologies.
- A master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
What’s on offer?
- A route into the space industry: Work on technology supporting the global satellite and Earth observation markets.
- Technically challenging work: Develop software across cloud infrastructure, backend services, connected devices and distributed systems.
- Professional development: Expand your knowledge of cloud engineering, software architecture and modern development practices.
- Exposure to advanced technology: Work at the intersection of software, cloud platforms and specialist hardware.
- A collaborative team: Join a friendly engineering environment where problem-solving, learning and technical curiosity are valued.
- Competitive salary: A package aligned with your experience and skills.
If you’re passionate about software engineering, curious about cloud and distributed systems, and excited by the prospect of working in the space technology sector, we’d love to hear from you.
