Senior Java Microservices Developer

£400/day (Inside IR35) Edinburgh (2 days pw onsite)

6 month Contract

Our client is looking for an experienced Senior Java Microservices Developer with 10+ years of software engineering experience to join a major financial services technology programme. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on designing, developing, testing and supporting scalable enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, React, PostgreSQL and AWS.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, maintain and enhance enterprise applications and services using Java, Spring Boot and Microservices.
• Develop and integrate REST APIs and backend services, supporting scalable and maintainable application architectures.
• Contribute to React-based Single Page Applications (SPAs) and integration between frontend and backend services.
• Design and optimise database interactions using PostgreSQL.
• Work with enterprise API gateway technologies including TYK, Apigee and IBM DataPower.
• Support application deployment and hosting across AWS, Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) and Tanzu Application Service (TAS).
• Develop and support batch processing and integration solutions using StreamSets, Apache Airflow, ESP Services and GSS.
• Participate in end-to-end solution design, technical discussions and code reviews.
• Write clean, maintainable, secure and well-tested code, following engineering standards.
• Support CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, deployment and release activities.

Essential Skills

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, ideally in enterprise or financial services environments.
• Strong hands-on Java and Spring Boot Microservices development experience.
• Experience designing, developing and integrating APIs and backend services.
• Experience with React and Single Page Applications (SPAs).
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL and relational database integration.
• Experience with API gateway technologies such as TYK, Apigee or IBM DataPower.
• Experience with cloud hosting and application platforms such as AWS, PCF or Tanzu Application Service (TAS).
• Familiarity with batch processing and enterprise integration technologies including StreamSets, Apache Airflow, ESP Services or GSS.
• Strong understanding of software design, clean coding, maintainability and automated testing.
• Experience supporting CI/CD pipelines and software delivery processes.
• Experience with production support, troubleshooting and incident resolution.
• Strong understanding of application security, resilience, performance and engineering standards.
• Ability to contribute to technical design discussions, code reviews and engineering decisions.
• Strong collaboration skills and experience working with multidisciplinary delivery teams.

Additional Relevant Experience

• Previous experience in Banking or Financial Services.
• Experience mentoring developers and providing hands-on technical guidance.
• Experience working across distributed application architectures and enterprise integration platforms.
• Strong understanding of production monitoring, operational support and application performance optimisation.
