Junior DevOps Engineer – Contract – Edinburgh (Hybrid)

Ampstek is hiring a Junior DevOps Engineer for a leading UK banking group. You’ll join an API Marketplace platform team that is modernising its services with cloud-native technology, automation and DevOps best practices, working alongside and learning from experienced platform and DevOps engineers.

Contract details

• Location: Edinburgh, hybrid
• Contract: 6–12 months
• Start: ASAP

What you’ll do

• Deploy, configure and maintain cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
• Provision infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
• Build and improve CI/CD pipelines and release automation
• Support containerised workloads on Kubernetes (GKE) and troubleshoot deployment issues
• Support monitoring, logging and alerting, and help investigate incidents and root causes
• Contribute to platform upgrades, configuration changes and service onboarding
• Apply security-first practices, including access controls and secure configurations
• Maintain runbooks, documentation and operating procedures

Essential skills

• Hands-on experience in a DevOps, cloud or platform engineering role
• Working knowledge of cloud computing (GCP preferred; AWS or Azure considered)
• Linux and command-line skills
• Git and version control
• Scripting in Bash, Python or PowerShell
• Understanding of CI/CD and DevOps principles
• Networking fundamentals: DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, TCP/IP
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills; comfortable in agile teams

Desirable skills

• GCP, GKE, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes
• Harness, GitHub Actions, Jenkins or GitLab CI
• Cloud monitoring and observability tools
• REST APIs and API gateways (Apigee)
• Cloud security and IAM
