We are looking for a collegiate and well-organised Histology laboratory technician to join the Veterinary Histology Laboratory in Easter Bush Pathology, part of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies on the Easter Bush Campus, University of Edinburgh. The provision of technical skills and expertise is essential in supporting the activities of the histopathology laboratory. Essential to this is the delivery of a histology service for teaching, as well as for both diagnostic and research purposes to a wide range of staff, within and out with the School of Veterinary Medicine including the Roslin Institute. This involves where applicable, the development of new analytical methods, as well as the supervision and training of junior staff.


Working under the Histology Laboratory Manager, and alongside experienced laboratory technicians, the post-holder will have a key role in the effective running of the histology service and the provision of specialised histotechnology, including the delivery of a wide range of tinctorially and immunohistochemically stained histological sections (both paraffin and frozen material).


Your skills and attributes for success: 



  • Practical experience of all manual histological techniques, including microtomy and cryotomy, accompanied by a comprehensive knowledge of tissue histology, tinctorial staining as well as Immunohistochemistry (IHC) 

  • An appropriate qualification and/or experience in Histology with a standard equivalent to that of a trainee/state registered Biomedical Scientist within an NHS (National Health Service) laboratory.

  • Working within a small laboratory team, the candidate must work well without direct supervision while also performing as part of that team.

  •  Strong time management and organisational skills, a good knowledge of safe laboratory practice, the ability to work to deadlines, excellent communication skills and a professional manner with colleagues and clients.

  •  Must be computer literate with commonly used software programmes.
