Job Description

Clerk of Works / Bridges Inspector (Structures)

Waverley Court

Salary: £32,010 - £37,626

Hours: 36 per week, 52 week

An opportunity has arisen within Roads & Infrastructure for the permanent post of Clerk of Works. This post is nominally based at the Council's Headquarters, Waverley Court, but generally this is a site-based post with some office and home-based working.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to undertake this challenging but highly rewarding role. The successful candidate should have an interest in bridges and retaining walls and inspections; previous experience will be beneficial. The Council has a vast array of over 500 interesting bridges and other structures. You will be part of a team undertaking inspections, and managing and co-ordinating the on-site works associated with Edinburgh's bridges, tunnels, gantries and retaining walls.

Duties May Include

  • General inspection of road structures (bridges, tunnels, gantries and retaining walls);
  • Preparation of contract documents for small maintenance projects such as masonry repairs, de-vegetation, graffiti removal or painting;
  • Deputising for Engineers and the Senior Engineer within the team;
  • Maintaining bridge records using the team's asset management database;
  • Preparation of engineering sketches and drawings;
  • Risk assessments;
  • Site supervision;
  • Response to structural emergencies such as collapsed cellars, bridge strikes or collapsed walls.

Our carbon-conscious approach to project delivery allows innovative individuals to flourish and the successful candidate will be encouraged to influence the future direction of their work, whilst operating in this site-based role.

We're committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits that a diverse workforce with different values, beliefs, experience, and backgrounds brings to us as an organisation.

As part of our goal to improve our organisational culture and create a great place to work together for the people of Edinburgh, we want to make sure that we're bringing the best people into our roles, not just in their skills and experience but also in their approach to work.

To help achieve this, we're changing the way we interview and assess candidates by moving from a competency-based interview approach to a behavioural and technical (skills for the job) based approach. This new way of interviewing will allow us to assess how you think and how you would bring Our Behaviours of Respect, Integrity and Flexibility into your ways of working.

You can find out more on Our Behaviours web page Our Behaviours - The City of Edinburgh Council

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.

Happy to talk flexible working.
