We are seeking a highly analytical, curious, and proactive Strategy Analyst to join our dynamic Strategy & Regulation team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the long-term vision and strategic direction of a vital UK energy infrastructure company during a period of unprecedented change. You will play a key role in conducting in-depth research, analysing complex data, and generating insights that inform critical business decisions.

This role offers exposure to a wide range of strategic challenges, from regulatory developments and technological advancements to market dynamics and future business models. You will work alongside experienced professionals, contributing directly to projects that will define SGN's future.

We deliver safety, warmth, and comfort to homes and businesses. Every role, whether in the office or on the front line, plays a key part in this mission. Here’s how you will contribute…

  • Conduct research and analysis on UK energy markets, with a focus on gas, hydrogen, biomethane, and other decarbonisation technologies.
  • Monitor trends, regulatory developments, and changes in policy, technology, and consumer behaviour, assessing their impact on SGN and the wider energy system.
  • Evaluate competitor strategies and the evolving role of gas networks within a whole-system context.
  • Provide clear, actionable insights to internal stakeholders based on complex information.
  • Support the development and communication of SGN’s long-term strategy.
  • Contribute to strategic projects, scenario planning, and business case development in collaboration with teams across the organisation.
  • Collect and analyse data to support modelling and decision-making.
  • Use tools such as Excel and Power BI to present insights clearly and effectively.
  • Source information from industry reports, academic research, regulatory publications, and consultations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant policy, regulatory, and technological developments.
  • Prepare high-quality presentations, briefing notes, and reports for senior stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to test ideas, align thinking, and support strategic initiatives.
  • Communicate findings clearly and persuasively, adapting style to suit the audience.

What You Will Need

  • 2-5 years of experience in an analytical role within a fast-paced environment, ideally within the energy, utilities, infrastructure, or a related highly regulated sector (e.g., consulting, financial analysis, market research).
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant quantitative discipline such as Economics, Business, Finance, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrable strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills with a proven ability to interpret complex data and draw sound conclusions.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data manipulation, analysis, and modelling.
  • Proficiency in creating impactful presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Emerging understanding of key business drivers and commercial principles within a regulated utility or energy sector.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team and build relationships across departments.
  • A keen interest in the UK energy sector, including gas distribution, the regulatory environment (Ofgem), and the energy transition to Net Zero.
  • Eagerness to learn about new energy technologies (e.g., hydrogen, biomethane) and their implications for infrastructure.

Not sure you meet every requirement?

Research shows some people – particularly women and those from underrepresented backgrounds – may hesitate to apply unless they meet every criteria. At SGN, we value diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.

If this role interests you but you’re not sure you tick every box, we’d still love to hear from you. You might be just who we’re looking for – now or in the future.

Why SGN?

SGN is a leader in pioneering research and development toward a net-zero energy system. Our cutting-edge technologies and innovative thinking are driving change in the gas industry, all while keeping people safe and warm.
